Edith Clarke, an electrical engineer and later professor, was the first woman to be professionally employed in the United States. She made significant advances in the field such as inventing the graphical calculator, otherwise known as the Clarke Calculator. This invention was used to determine the electrical components of electrical transmission lines and greatly helped in simplifying calculations.
